“God Loves Jacob” by The Motel Life (bandcamp)
Everyone is gone, everyone is gone and I am alone
Every son of god, every son of god was lost all along
Every word, I wrote every battle fought, I was wrong
Everyone is gone, everyone is gone and I am alone…
Alone
Notes:
Mike – This song was quite the oddity. I don’t remember the day when I actually wrote the lyrics, but they stem from issues that concern taking the wrong path in life and ending up alone. When I was young I would see a lot people I loved devote themselves fully to something and come out ruining everything they had worked for in their lives. There are some Religious undertones that fuel this song as well. That theme of Religion runs a lot throughout this album, especially in songs like “Sunday School” and “Falling Asleep”. The title came late in the process of making the album. The original name for the song was “God Loves” but I changed it because that title never really reflected the song’s lyrics and a reference to my favorite show, Lost, just made more sense.
Judcody - This track was written on an old antique acoustic that was very out of tune. I’ve always had a bad habit of writing songs in different tunings and not remembering exactly what I did. This made this track very hard to recover since my brother had deleted the actual project file. When mike wrote to it after almost a year of being in my iTunes, I was glad it received justice.
Al - “God Loves Jacob” is another song Judcody pretty much had in his little bag of tricks. I had no involvement in the song during the recording and writing process. To me, “God Loves Jacob” is one of the strongest songs on the album and it makes for a good transition from the first half of the album to the last half. Even though it is an acoustic song, it’s one of the hardest songs on the album.
Ray - I like this song because of the awesome standup bass parts that I had no part in, also because it’s a Lost reference.
Nick - This is probably my most favorite song on the record. I think the lyrics really stand-alone tell you a story in such a short time frame. When Judcody had written the guitar part, it was on some way out of tune guitar that probably should have never seen the light of day but he made it work. When mike showed us the melody, I was amazed. It wasn’t really like anything else on retreat. I would love to play this song more often live but at the same time its nice to just have and listen to. P.S. The only part that bothered me about the song was the title because I never got into Lost.
